1. Roughly 1/4th of the world's population doesnot have access to safe drinking water.
2. An estimated 100 million people are homeless.
3. More than a billion lacks adequate shelter.
4. 1/5th of the population in developing countries about 800 million is malnourished.
5. 1.3 billion live on less than $1 a day.
so there is a need to make the most efficient use of the world's scarce resources to satisfy the basic needs & wants of as many people as possible. But are we doing so?
One the on hand, it is estimated that the additional cost of achieving and maintaining 1.universal access to basic education for all,2.reproductive health care for all women,3.adequate food for all and 4.safe water and sanitation for all is roughly $ 40 billion a year __
On the other, according to UNDP report 1998, the world is spending $ 780 billion on military chauvinism and $ 400 billion on narcotics every year

WHO CAN IMPROVE THIS SITUATION? AND HOW?
All of us can, simply by changing our attitudes whoever we are and wherever we are.
1. Pressurize the govts at our own levels to substitute defence and other expenditure for health and education. With more healthy and educated minds we would not be needing wars to settle our disputes.
As it is said, better civilization is not the one that is good at fighting wars rather it is the one that is good at preventing wars.
2. if we can afford to then we must adopt a child or children.
one cannot serve mankind better than raising an orphan child.
3. say NO to narcotics and arms. Their demand will fall and we will be utilizing our resources to produce other useful goods.
4. Believe in brotherhood. we belonging to different regions and religions, colours and races,sects and gender are all humans. This world is for all of us to live. we can live with our differences as friends. we don't have to end our differences with wars or otherwise.
with no wars there is no large scale disasters and sufferings and no wastage of resources.
5. one of the biggest problem of our time is pollution. It increases the social cost of the society. No private benefit is greater than the social cost of the enviroment pollution.
Make sure that you are not causing pollution in your environment and pressurize your government to take actions against those who are causing it.
6. Work hard & smart to increase your income.The better service you produce the more you earn and more efficient resource you become.
7. Improve your standard of living.Spend what you earn because your expenditure is some one else's income.
8. Encourage women to take part in the production of goods & services. Nearly half the world's population is women. Their participation can double the human resource of this world.
9. Discourage beggars. People should use their time and energy to earn from productive activities only and become a resource for this world.
10. Spread these words of wisdom to as many people as possible and make this world a better place to live.
